Earth’s surface is divided into large blocks of land, called continents, and large stretches of salt water, called oceans.
The 6 continents
Most geographers count 6 continents: Africa, the Americas, Antarctica, Asia, Europe and Oceania. (In some classifications, the Americas are split into North America and South America, making 7.)
The 5 oceans
Earth has 5 oceans: the Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, Arctic and Southern (also called Antarctic) Oceans. The Pacific Ocean is the largest of all — on its own, it’s bigger than all the continents combined!
