Ancient Egypt was one of the first great civilizations in history, emerging more than 5,000 years ago along the banks of the Nile River in northeastern Africa.
The Nile was essential: its yearly floods left the land fertile for farming, which let many people live close together and build cities.
Example
The ancient Egyptians built the pyramids as tombs for their rulers, the pharaohs. The Great Pyramid of Giza, built for the pharaoh Khufu, is more than 4,500 years old and is still standing today — one of the few Wonders of the Ancient World to survive to this day.
The Egyptians also created one of the world’s first writing systems: hieroglyphs, symbols that represented words and sounds.
