Nouns and Adjectives

Recommended age: 7-9 years old

A noun is a word that names things: people, animals, objects and places. Examples: dog, school, Maria, ball.

An adjective is a word that describes a noun — what it’s like. Examples: big, blue, happy, fast.

Example

In the sentence “The big dog ran fast”:

  • dog → noun (the thing that runs)
  • big → adjective (describes the dog)
  • fast → adjective (describes how it ran)

Let’s practice!

In the sentence “The red ball rolled down the narrow street”, find:

  1. The two nouns.
  2. The two adjectives.

Answer: Nouns: ball and street. Adjectives: red (describes the ball) and narrow (describes the street).
