Introduction to Fractions
Recommended age: 8-10 years old
A fraction represents a part of a whole. It is written as two numbers separated by a line: the top one (numerator) and the bottom one (denominator).
- The denominator tells you how many equal parts the whole was split into.
- The numerator tells you how many of those parts you’re counting.
Example
Imagine a pizza cut into 4 equal slices. If you eat 3 slices, you’ve eaten 3/4 (three-fourths) of the pizza.
- Denominator = 4 → the pizza was split into 4 parts.
- Numerator = 3 → you ate 3 of those parts.
Let’s practice!
A chocolate bar was split into 5 equal pieces. You ate 2 pieces.
What fraction of the chocolate bar did you eat?
Answer: 2/5 (two-fifths) — numerator 2 (what you ate), denominator 5 (the total number of pieces).
